Movember Fundraising: Do It For Stu!
by meep
Since 2017, I have been doing Movember fundraising:
My husband Stuart was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2017. The treatment regimen he’s been on didn’t even exist until recently, and he’s been stable, though this is currently uncurable cancer.
Globally, more than 1.4M men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Movember is working to halve the number of deaths from prostate cancer by 2030, and I want to help them get there. Help me stop men dying too young.
I support all three of the goals of the Movember Foundation: action on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and improving men’s mental health (and reducing suicide).
Stu is the STU part of STUMP (and I’m the MP part, obviously). He makes me able to post by getting stuff done in the background – making sure I have internet, hardware, backups, etc.
Video version of this post
Here’s the video, for those who prefer video:
Some stats
- Men account for 4 out of every 5 suicides, and on average 103 men will take their own life every day in the US.
- 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
- Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in young American men.
Those are the headlines, and here is some of the mixed news:
I got the age-adjusted death rates for men, for both prostate cancer and suicide from the CDC — the rates are per 100,000 men.
The news for prostate cancer has been fantastic — the improvement in the past 30 years has been great, though recent improvements have been small.
Suicide, on the other hand — it has gotten worse among men. I am happy that the Movember Foundation is focusing on this key cause of death among men, especially as it is surpassing prostate cancer, on an age-adjusted basis.
(An explanation of Age-adjusted death rates is here.)
Movember fundraising
This is how I had done as of yesterday:
I have already bumped up a little above that now, and my involvement, in the activity challenge, is actually more like 25 miles of walking so far, not 22 miles.
Please donate to my fundraiser!
My fundraising page at the Movember site is here: Mary Pat Campbell’s Movember fundraising site.
I also have a facebook fundraiser page, if that’s easier for you: Mary Pat’s facebook fundraiser
I will be doing two more posts/videos for Movember: one on prostate cancer, and one on men and suicide — elucidating the graph you see above.
Thanks for your support!
